Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005. I probably agree with you more than I disagree, but my objection was to your phrasing: “living for pleasure.” To live for something is to devote yourself to it, to be infatuated with it, to fight for it. It is fine to enjoy pleasure (who doesn’t), but it is not worth living for: there are greater things.

  7. ribaldi Says:

If you find value in the “right things”, then you understand my meaning of enjoyment.

Why is living for pleasures like a good meal, good company or a good book, etc. unlikely to be found? These are often defined as simple pleasures and is achievable everyday.

gutes vid ich und was männer angeht ab zu HeisseZone . com das wirds auf dem silber Tablett serviert

  9. leroyinc Says:

Yes. If you live for pleasure, you are unlikely to find it. If you live for the right things, you will likely find them and pleasure thrown in.

  10. luismmolinamx1 Says:

    Good luck with that =)

  12. Keferke100 Says:

Working for mac/appel is my dream, i love the stuf they make :D

  13. WolfShadow1234 Says:

Great speech, I’m actually typing this message on a mac right now haha.

I really hope I can find something I love to do in life. Sometimes you think you’re going down the right path but sometimes it hits you that what you’re studying isn’t what you really want.

I agree with Steve that you should never stop looking for what you love to do, you’re going to do it for the rest of your life so you might as well like it at least :P

  14. DanNinjaMan Says:

Just one second stanford while I stroke myself behind this podium.

  15. julyathelstan Says:

I LOVE MAC!! THIS GUY IS GENIUS!!

  16. ribaldi Says:

Find value in something. Do it, feel it or be in it – which ever applies. Appreciate what that something is. Repeat.

Is there anything wrong with living for pleasure?

  17. janini60 Says:

“be foolish and hungry” . nice .
I guess he ment be hungry for knowledge .
Be foolish , never say i know every thing !!!

  18. zinhometeu Says:

what’s your prespective on “enjoying your time in life”. because if you believe that enjoying life is living for pleasure then our conversation won’t go anywhere

  19. shahinarya Says:

As he says: “don’t live someone else’s life”. Well, don’t live Steve Jobs’ either :) Not going to school and many other things Steve Jobs has done could only work for someone like him. So, do go to school get a good education, do start a company of you have an idea, and convince the board you are right not John Scummy so that Newton would have been the Palm, iPod, the first MP3 player, iPhone the Nokia and… Steve Job’s losing the political battle to John Scully caused the world so so much!

  20. aliabdalla4 Says:

    good jobs!
i hope things do fall into place for me im facing some very hard time right now and a kid my age shouldnt have the troubles or worries that have been placed on my shoulders…

  21. rkumar1310 Says:

  22. strikeNgoal Says:

  23. evgeniy13 Says:

Then we better colonize more ”room’” or else we are going to need another A. Hitler.
Our reality is no much different with Logan’s Run plot, where ppl were obliged to be killed by a giant laser at their 30th, so “room” won’t be overcrowded. 30 or 70 is no huge difference. Also overpopulation is overestimated, as as it was in that movie by laser people. Watch Overpopulation: The Making of a Myth
